Daily Report - Day 3

3.6.14
After having early breakfast we left the hotel at 7:30 a.m. and headed towards Darjeeling. It was a beautiful and spectacular journey and it took us nearly two and a half hours to reach Darjeeling. On our way we stopped at few sight-seeing points like “Lamahatta” which is a community based village tourism. We also visited a tea garden. (Darjeeling is world famous for tea.) We then went to Milan Sangh Government Primary School at Lassa Villa, Darjeeling. This school was established in 1965 and recognized by the government in 1971. The building structure of the school is wooden but it is in a bad condition. In case of load shedding or power cut, the school becomes very dark and it becomes impossible for the kids to study. There are total 30 students with the age group ranging from 5 to 12 years and come from very poor families. The teachers and the students extended a very warm welcome to us. The principal welcomed us with a short speech. Then Mr. Saom Namchu delivered a highly inspiring speech and also introduced NER Group and EKIN to the teachers and students. The NER group sponsored educational items like a set of teaching learning material, a set of library books, a library cupboard and two water filters. We also gave them a metal plaque with NER Group, EKIN, EDI and GFF inscribed on it. We had a doctor Ms. Kukula Bhutia who medically examined all the students. Few members of “Rotary Club” were also present there. They were the ones who introduced this school to GFF. A vote of thanks was delivered by the Rotary Club members. We then left the place with very fond memories and a feeling of immense satisfaction. After that we went to the famous Mal Road, one of the famous tourist attractions in Darjeeling. We had a wonderful lunch and did a lot of shopping. Then we came back to Kalimpong.
